The Old West | Some Old Western Family Names

When you think of good old western historical names like Mulholland, Wilshire, Hegarty, Lansing, LaVey, Holliday, Parsons, Earp and Baldwin you tend to think of prospectors, saloons, developers and The Old West. Sometimes overlooked are the old western magic and witchcraft real family names.

Western Magic and Witchcraft — The kind with the western cowboy boots and pointed hats — really is it’s own tradition and practice that goes back hundreds of years in California and indeed progressed from the Eastern U.S.A with the Western expansion of the United States. Shamanism and Witches are not just in Salem Massachusetts they are a part of our shared indigenous native cultures, including those from Eastern Europe and Southwest Asia. When you come West and finally hit Los Angeles and San Francisco California you end up with a non-denominational modern form of Paganism that has picked up traditions along the way like burr’s in a woman’s long cloak or a wolves fur.

Culturally the far west across the pacific looks eastward to the Western U.S.A. for some of it’s media images and inspiration.

Indeed the very thing you are reading this on: The Internet comes from the Western U.S.A. Pick a natural dividing line in the world and probably the San Andreas fault in California would be as good a place as any to start. The most popular film and movie industry worldwide is in California. The popular cultural influences reach far and wide into every part of the world. This is why the state is of one of the modern “centers of  the world” and has a economy the size that it does.

We forget that Wyatt Earp ended up in, Los Angeles and Doc Holliday in Colorado. The LaVey’s were from Chicago Illinois and came to San Francisco and Los Angeles, The Earp’s were from Monmouth Illinois. Wyatt Earp lived in the canyons on the border of Riverside and San Bernardino and ended up in Los Angeles, just to name two old western family names. Continuing with that theme Wilshire is the name of a local peak and family and a famous boulevard in Los Angeles. Baldwin “Lucky Baldwin” is a name from Los Angeles and San Bernardino: The LA County Arboretum is the old mansion grounds in Arcadia on Baldwin Avenue and his mine in Big Bear Lake was the second largest gold strike in California — it goes on and on but they are just old time western names.

Louise Huebner from Los Angeles California is the Only Officially Appointed Witch in the World. Arguably the City with the Most Crossroads in the World is Los Angeles and the Goddess of the Crossroads and Witchcraft is Hekate. The Official Crossroads is therefore Somewhere in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles, United States Arguably Los Angeles has the most crossroads in the world. The Goddess of the Crossroads is Hekate.

One in three hundred (1 in 300) people will be LaVey fans and five to ten (5–10) in one hundred will be fans of Magic, Witches and Wizards all around the world. To put it into movie star famous terms, it’s about the same percentages as a 50 million dollar grossing movie star name, or what it really is: good old western family historical names.

In our California history; whispering to the spirits, reading the cards, herbalists, telling fortunes, spells, charms for good luck and meeting the devil at the crossroads are all in the Old West tradition. We love it, we get it and it’s all a part of our history. The business link below is from a Facebook post about essay readings from a Old Western writers family at a local store: Stanton LaVey reading his grandparents unpublished private thoughts. Some old timers might show up now and again.
